Anthony Buono:
Founder and President

Anthony considers this a personal apostolate and has deep-hearted commitment to the needs of single Catholics and servicing them most effectively. He works full-time on it, but also has other businesses that supplement his income to provide for his family, consisting of his wife, Bridget, and their seven children, Mary, Isaac, Paul, Gregory, Lydia, Joseph and Bethany.

In 1998, Anthony, while working for a Catholic book publisher in New Jersey, had been meeting so many single Catholics around the country with the same complaint of being frustrated that they are called to marriage and cannot meet the right person, coupled with their temptation to believe there is no hope in finding that right person (or that there is even anyone out there like themselves). Recognizing the need for a way for these devout singles to meet each other and the power of the new medium, the Internet, he got the idea to create the website. So he asked his wife, Bridget, if he could take out a second mortgage to get the $15,000 necessary to start the first website of this service. She agreed and it all began.

When asked how a married man with many children can know what the needs of single Catholics are, his reply is, "I know what it was like to be single with a marriage vocation, anxious to get into my vocation, but have complete frustration in the reality that there just doesn’t seem to be anyone out there like myself when it comes to the deep conviction of my faith and who does not believe in the use of contraception (particularly inside of marriage)."

His work is dedicated to seeing that no one experiences that feeling and that frustration, and considers it a privilege to be a part of God's work to bring about so many marriages (and children as a result).

Our History

• Established in May 1998 under the name of “Single Catholics Online” in the state of New Jersey.
  
• In February 1999, the first SCOL marriage took place, along with founder Anthony Buono’s first appearance on EWTN’s “The Abundant Life”.
  
• In first year of business over 1,000 members sign up.
  
• In January 2000, moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to be associated with Thomas S. Monaghan and his Ave Maria Foundation.
  
• In the year 2000, with the financial assistance of Thomas Monaghan, Ave Maria Singles™ quickly grew to 3,000 more members and another 3,000 in 2001.
  
• In December 2002, Thomas S. Monaghan puts full financial efforts into his Ave Maria University project and discontinues association with Ave Maria Singles™. The name of Ave Maria Singles™ is retained, though no longer having any connection with the Ave Maria Foundation. Without Mr. Monaghan’s financial assistance, AMS could never have become what it has. We will always be grateful to him.
  
• In December 2003, a new website launches that features successful couples and the new Ask Married Members feature.
